Overview

Waste Management Solutions Built on Accurate Weight Data

Weight data sits at the heart of every waste management and recycling operation. From the waste collected at the kerbside to the materials recovered, recycled, treated or sent to landfill, accurate weight information drives legislative compliance, customer billing and operational efficiency.

Avery Weigh-Tronix weighing scales, weighbridges and waste management weighbridge software capture that information at every step, in real time, without slowing your site down. We help waste operators, recyclers and local authorities across the UK and Ireland record every tonne, report with confidence and get on with business.

Digital Weighing Systems in Waste Management: Meeting Compliance and Efficiency Demands

UK waste regulation is moving from paper to digital. For waste transfer stations, materials recovery facilities, landfill sites, scrap metal processors and recycling centres, the weighbridge is now where compliance begins. A digital weighing system records every waste movement accurately, links it to the right vehicle and waste type, and shares that data with your waste management software and regulators automatically.

Mandatory Digital Waste Tracking: What’s Changing for Waste Operators?

Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) is the DEFRA service, introduced under the Environment Act 2021, that replaces paper based waste transfer records with one central digital record of waste movements across the UK. Since 1 October 2026, mandatory digital waste tracking applies to permitted and licensed waste receiving sites in England and Wales, and each load must be reported within two working days of receipt.

For every waste movement you record structured data, including European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes, SIC codes, quantities, origin, destination and treatment outcome. Data can be submitted by API, CSV upload or online portal. Carriers, brokers and dealers are expected to follow in a later phase, with Scotland and Northern Ireland on their own timetable.

The Role of Weighbridges and Integrated Software

Can weighing systems integrate with waste management software and reporting systems? Yes. Your weighbridge records the one figure every waste record depends on: accurate weight. Paired with Weighman weighbridge software, each transaction captures the vehicle registration, customer, waste type, EWC code and net weight in real time.

That data flows automatically into your waste management system, ERP and finance software, and through the DEFRA Receipt of Waste API into Digital Waste Tracking, so there is no re keying and no duplicated effort. Barriers, traffic lights, ANPR cameras and unmanned terminals extend this further, helping you control traffic flow, keep your site safe and run 24 hour operations without extra staff.

What Software Is Used in Waste Management?

Most waste sites use three connected layers of software: weighbridge software for weighing and ticketing, a waste management system for customers, jobs and invoicing, and the government DWT service for regulatory reporting. The most efficient sites connect all three, so a weight recorded once at the weighbridge feeds every report. For local authorities, our sister brand Exactrak adds route planning and fleet tracking, trusted by more than 75 per cent of UK local authorities for winter gritting routes.

Common Challenges with Manual or Legacy Approaches to Waste Management

Paper based tickets and older standalone systems were not designed for digital compliance. The most common problems we see are:

  • Inaccurate data from handwritten tickets and manual re keying
  • Delayed reporting that risks missing the two working day DWT deadline
  • Missing or incorrect EWC codes discovered only at audit
  • No photographic or ANPR evidence when a weight is disputed
  • Weight data trapped on one PC, with no cloud based or multi site visibility
  • Greater exposure to weighbridge fraud and lost revenue

Each gap adds audit risk and cost. Digital weighing closes them at source.

Benefits and ROI

Benefits Realised: Improved Compliance, Cost Control and Sustainability

Effective digital weighing delivers measurable improvements across your operation. Here is how sites move from manual processes to connected, real time weighing.

Scenario
Before
After
Data accuracy
Handwritten tickets, typing errors and missing EWC codes. Validated data captured once at the weighbridge, with photo and ANPR evidence.
Reporting time
Hours each week re keying tickets into spreadsheets and portals. Automatic DWT submissions and scheduled reports, well within two working days.
Cost control
Undetected fraud and disputed weights eroding margin. Real time anomaly alerts. On a site weighing £115.5m of material a year, recovering 1 per cent is worth £1.16m.*
Sustainability
Tonnage data scattered across sites and spreadsheets. Real time diversion and recycling rates by waste stream for ESG and EPR reporting.

*Illustrative example: 350 vehicles a day, 10 tonnes a load, £110 a tonne gate fee, 300 operating days.

Continuous Monitoring and Optimisation

How do you track waste reduction? Start with accurate weight. By comparing inbound tonnage with recovered, recycled and residual outputs, you can track diversion rates by waste stream, customer and site over time. Ongoing analytics show where contamination, over filling or process losses occur, helping you reduce waste, support the circular economy and demonstrate sustainable results with audit ready data.

How Weighing Systems Reduce Costs at Waste Facilities

Accurate weighing reduces costs by charging for every tonne correctly, preventing weighbridge fraud, optimising payloads to avoid overloading fines, cutting administration time and enabling unmanned operation outside staffed hours.

Waste Weighing Essentials

A weighbridge, or truck scale, is a large platform scale that weighs road vehicles and their loads. Waste sites use weighbridges to weigh incoming and outgoing loads, charge customers accurately, calculate landfill tax and record every waste movement for regulators. Weighbridges used for trade must be verified under the Non Automatic Weighing Instruments Regulations 2016 (NAWI 2016). Paired with barriers, traffic lights and cameras, a weighbridge also controls traffic flow and improves site safety.

Waste processing facilities must comply with legislation that protects the environment, human health and resources. Accurate, traceable weighing underpins:

  • Digital Waste Tracking under the Environment Act 2021
  • Environmental permit conditions and Environment Agency audits
  • Waste duty of care, hazardous and non hazardous waste records
  • Landfill tax returns
  • Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Simpler Recycling reporting
  • Trade approved weighing under NAWI 2016

Our UKAS accredited calibration and statutory verification keep your weighing equipment audit ready.

FAQ

Waste Management System FAQs

Yes, if you run a permitted or licensed waste receiving site in England or Wales. Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) has been mandatory there since 1 October 2026, and each load must be reported within two working days. Weighman weighbridge software records the EWC code, SIC code and weight at the weighbridge, checks them, and sends them to DEFRA through the Receipt of Waste API. Read our Digital Waste Tracking guide.

Link every weight to a verified vehicle, a photograph and the vehicle’s position on the deck. Avery One Protect uses ANPR cameras, positioning sensors and rules based alerts to catch bypassing, weight manipulation, swapped vehicles and ghost tickets in real time. It can block a weigh when a vehicle is out of position. It comes in three tiers, from single sites to unmanned estates. Explore weighbridge anti fraud.

A weighbridge used for trade should be re verified at least once every twelve months under the Non Automatic Weighing Instruments Regulations 2016 (NAWI 2016). For busy waste sites running more than 80 vehicles a day, we recommend every six months. Our UKAS laboratory 0054 engineers carry out the Zero Check, Linearity Test, Off Centre Test and Reliability Test, and a BridgeCare contract schedules them so you never miss a due date.

Our regionally based engineers are dispatched from depots near you across the UK and Ireland, backed by 8 owned weighbridge test units. BridgeCare Total contracts include a written 97% uptime guarantee. If we miss it, part of your annual fee is refunded. That keeps queues short, tonnage flowing and DWT submissions on time. Yes. Our unmanned weighbridge systems combine stored tare weights, ANPR, barriers and driver terminals, so vehicles weigh in and out safely without a weighbridge clerk. Every transaction is recorded with photographic evidence, and Weighbridge Remote Site Monitoring lets you manage several sites from one screen. Landfill, transfer stations and anaerobic digestion plants can extend their opening hours without adding staff.

Yes. Weighman captures each weight once at the weighbridge, along with the vehicle, customer, waste type and EWC code. It then shares that data automatically with your waste management system, ERP, finance and billing software, and with DEFRA Digital Waste Tracking. That ends re keying, reduces errors and keeps invoices and regulatory reports consistent from a single audit ready record.

Yes. We calibrate and service every UK installed weighbridge, including Weightron, Shering, Precia Molen and Mettler Toledo, plus scales from every major manufacturer. Mixed estates are covered by a single contract with one renewal date, one certificate library and one number to ring. Every certificate is traceable to the National Standards of Mass, so you have one accountable partner across all your sites.

Use floor or platform scales with a checkweighing indicator. The new ZM223 Indicator and Checkweigher has a colour changing display that shows at a glance whether each bale or container is in tolerance.
