Power Generation

Weigh raw materials, achieve net zero and manage inventory

Overview

The power generation sector is under the spotlight more so than ever, with regulations in place to decarbonise the industry whilst meeting increasing demand with ageing infrastructure. Scales and weighing systems are essential for the power generation market to measure and record raw materials travelling in and out of production plants. The data recorded by these systems not only supports regulatory compliance and protects revenue, but also improves safety and operational efficiency.

In a mission critical sector with such harsh operational environments, scales and weighing systems like weighbridges and hoppers must be robust enough to withstand corrosive atmospheres, heavy washdowns, shock loading, extreme temperatures and daily use. They must be economical and easy to use and maintain and guarantee minimal unplanned downtime.

The accuracy of scales used in the power generation industry is of real importance, with power plants in the UK weighing the materials they import to ensure the sector pays the correct price for the materials it purchases from other countries.

Scales are also used to accurately measure and record waste, which is reported back to the government to support its bid to achieve net zero for the sector by 2035.

Weighbridges, hoppers and load cells on tanks are used to accurately measure large quantities of coal, biomass, or fuel oil used in energy generation. Weighing the incoming and outgoing flow of materials ensures efficient inventory management and prevents over or understocking.

Since the UK’s energy production peaked in 1999, there has been a sharp rise in the import of coal, primary oil, petroleum products, and gas. Power plants use weighing and measuring equipment to record their consumption of imported materials to ensure the UK – and individual power plant operators – pay the right amount for essential imported ingredients.

Power plants are subject to strict regulations, and accurate measurement of waste materials is essential for compliance. Weighing equipment can be used in conjunction with other monitoring systems to measure the amount of waste and pollutants being created.

The UK Government has committed to decarbonising the power system by 2035. A big part of this transition will involve harnessing the potential of renewable generation. As the energy mix changes, compliance and measurement will become more important – whether for weighing the equipment itself, or for inventory and waste management.
