Materials Recovery Facilities

Scales and weighing equipment for Materials Recovery Facilities

Materials Recovery Facilities (also known as Multi re-use facilities, or MRF’s) are increasingly important in providing quality raw materials to industry. MRFs separate mixed recyclables into their individual material streams in order to process and prepare them for sale in commodity markets.

The recycling industry revolves around weight, as both the buying and selling of recycled materials are based upon the weight of the collected items. Whether the goal is to optimise profits, to pay for precisely the materials deposited or purchased, or simply to offer an added level of security, weighing equipment capable of reliable and repeatable weighing is essential for improving billing accuracy and the overall bottom line in MRF applications.

In addition, the sampling required by the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2014 determines that waste operators must know the weights within the waste streams that they are dealing with.

The ability to use software, RFID (radio frequency identification) and video footage to track vehicles into and out of a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) provides sites with an additional level of security, acting as a funnel which provides important data about who and what is entering and leaving the site. In addition, sensors can be used to ensure that vehicles are correctly positioned on the weighbridge, helping to ensure the weighments are correctly recorded.

Whether dealing with high value waste streams or fulfilling sampling obligations, the accuracy of your weight measurements is essential. Our range of highly accurate bench scales offer extreme precision and are available in a range of sizes and capacities, while also being rugged enough to withstand the abuse of a tough recycling environment.

Keeping vehicles moving in a safe and efficient manor is vital to the smooth running of any MRF. For increased efficiency, weighbridge controls can be integrated into a standalone console that facilitates unattended weighing operations. The terminals enable drivers to complete weighing transactions 24/7, without leaving their cab. The result is that your weighbridge can run smoothly without a dedicated operator. This results in reduced operating costs, extended hours of availability and improved traffic management when on site.

Forklift Scales can also be used to seamlessly integrate weighing and data management into recycling centres. Forklift scales allow users to weigh bundled and palletized recycled materials en route, without slowing operations down by stopping at a floor scale. The ability to transport and weigh materials in one simple step results in tremendous time savings and a speedy return on investment.

As legislation across the waste and recycling industry becomes increasingly complex, so do the requirements for tracking and reporting waste management processes. From 1 October 2024, there will be a requirement for more materials recycling facilities to sample, test and report on their waste in accordance with the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2023.

Under these amended regulations sampling and reporting will become a more frequent requirement, meaning every Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in England and Wales receiving over 1000 tonnes a year must adopt routine sampling, composition testing and measurement of mixed material inputs.

Our efficient, robust weighing systems make regulatory compliance straightforward, while helping your operation to run efficiently. Bench and platform scales provide accurate weight readings and traceability for sampling rooms.

Weighbridges and axle weighing systems from Avery Weigh-Tronix will help ensure that lorries are loaded to the ideal weight and conform to stringent legal maximum weight regulations. Accurate weighing helps companies avoid costly fines as well as premature vehicle wear due to excessive loading, while also avoiding costly under-loading by ensuring that vehicles are loaded to safe capacity
