Rail weighing is crucial in industries where bulk material is either received or dispatched through rail route. From monitoring product deliveries to avoiding overloading penalties, rail weighing equipment play a vital role in productivity and profitability of such operations.

Some of the primary objectives for weighing rail wagons include:

  • For rail operator (Indian Railways) & shipper/freight forwarders
    • Invoice freight charges based on verified weights
    • Data Integration with Railways FOIS system
    • Check overloading which can damage cars, wagons and rail infrastructure and lead to safety hazards & charge penalties
  • For suppliers & purchasers – for weight verification and assessment of transit losses & pilferage
  • For wagon / loco manufacturing & servicing
  • For steel making industries – To measure process inputs/outputs in coke-charging car,  quenching car, scrap-car & ladle-car operations

Types of Rail Weighing systems (based on mode of operation) -

Static rail weighbridge
In this type, normally a single wagon in weighed in static, coupled or uncoupled condition while positioned on pit-mounted weighbridge platform/s. Static rail weighbridges can have accuracy ranging from +/- 0.02% to 0.05%. Wagon Tippler weighbridge is a variant of static rail weighbridge which is incorporated in a wagon tippler, used for emptying bulk material from open-top wagons in to track hopper.   

In-motion weighbridge
In this type, a number of wagons in the form of a rake/train, are weighed dynamically while moving over –

  • either a pair / set of special rails with embedded transducers for pit-less installation
  • or a steel structure on load cells, for a pit-mounted installation

In-Motion rail weighbridge (also called Rail WIM system) can typically have accuracy up to +/-0.5% for wagons and +/- 0.2% for rake.

Although, in-motion weighbridges have more stringent site requirements and lower accuracy as compared to static weighbridges, they are often a preferred choice due to much faster weighing operation in order to avoid demurrage charges.
