“It might sound clichéd, but in my role as a Technical Engineer no two days are ever the same! Day-to-day I could be working on anything from carrying out annual calibrations or preventative maintenance work, to repairing broken equipment.
Avery Weigh-Tronix provides service support for different makes and models of weighing equipment so we come across some interesting challenges, but luckily this variety certainly keeps things interesting!
Our customers cannot be without their weighing equipment, so our service impacts their business in a big way as we have the responsibility of keeping their equipment up and running. No matter what the industry, if a piece of weighing equipment is down it can cause chaos to our customers’ operations, particularly if they are collecting revenue from the equipment.
In a breakdown situation, customers often cannot stop production, so we need to act fast to repair their equipment as quickly as possible. This can be tricky, especially as you never know when a breakdown call is going to come in, but the team is flexible and reactive, and we have the knowledge and skills to cope with whatever’s thrown at us!

We meet people from all walks of life, from industries from pharmaceuticals to farming, building professional (and personal) relationships with many of them over the years. We take phone calls at any time of day - sometimes a problem can be solved over the phone and our customers appreciate that our support and reassurance is always there.
The importance of accurate weighing shouldn’t be overlooked. For some of our customers, their reputation could massively suffer if there were suspicious their weighing equipment was not accurate.
To avoid this, I always advise my customers that cleaning is vital. Keeping your weighing equipment clean and in good working order is so important, and not just on top of the scale. Dirt can easily fall between gaps or in and around the load cells to give inaccurate weight readings.
I work with a fantastic team of people in Ireland, I’m relatively new compared to some of the other engineers, some of them have 40 or even 50 years’ service! But they’ve been more than happy to pass that knowledge on and it’s been great to learn from guys with so much experience.
