Increased landfill taxes came into effect over the weekend (Saturday April 1), rising from £84.40 per tonne to £86.10 (standard rate) and £2.65 per tonne to £2.70 (lower rate).

The updated 2017 rates follow the trend of yearly increases since the tax was introduced more than 20 years ago - and further increases for 2018 have already been set out.

This further increase in tax rates potentially puts landfill site operators at greater risk of fraud from those disposing of waste.

Paul Hines, Innovation Director for Avery Weigh-Tronix said: “With this rise in landfill tax comes the increased risk of those looking to cut corners and dodge a higher tax bill.

“This rise could increase fraud risk further, in the form of misdeclaration of goods or manipulating a weighbridge to make savings.

“It’s crucial that landfill site operators protect themselves against attempted fraud, but it’s not always easy to build additional checks and controls into a working operation without disruption. The Avery Weigh-Tronix Weighbridge Fraud Protection application runs on the ZM510 indicator and in conjunction with weighbridge sensors can prevent fraudulent transactions.”
