Waste Reduction and Sustainability Initiatives
At the heart of our sustainability initiative is the aim to move our facilities toward zero waste disposal to landfill. By working hand in hand with our waste management providers, we’re able to track individual waste streams, increase our recycling rates and identify cost-effective and responsible alternatives for our waste.
- Recycling: By segregating waste into separate material streams, we are able to maximise the opportunities for recovery and recycling. We work hard to meet out zero waste to landfill target.
- Anaerobic digestion: By diverting food waste from our on-site restaurant for anaerobic digestion, it can be used to generate clean energy and produce biofertiliser, significantly reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.
- Reducing air emmisions: We’ve changed the paint used to coat our large weighbridge units to a paint with a lower volatile organic compounds (VOC) with the aim of reducing air emmissions in the local area.
- Energy efficiency: By monitoring and recording energy use in each of the offices, as well as engaging and educating employees to act responsibly and be energy-wise, we are striving to minimise the use of energy resources. We’re currently running trials to reduce water and gas consumption on site and have replaced all lighting with low energy alternatives.
- Maximising vehicle efficiency: By investing in new, more efficient vehicles and using route optimisation software to minimise unnecessary mileage, we’re striving to make our fleet more environmentally friendly.
- Remote collaboration: By investing in remote collaboration tools such as video conferencing, we’re able to reduce the carbon footprint associated with business travel.

As well as our dedication to reducing our environmental impact across all Avery Weigh-Tronix sites, we’re also committed to enabling our customers to become more sustainable through the solutions we offer. From the use of equipment such as weight indicators with low-power-draw displays to our specialist waste management software TraceWaste, we help customers to measure the effectiveness and quantify the financial impact of waste reduction initiatives while also complying with industry legislation such as the EU Waste Directive, WEEE Regulations and The Landfill Directive.
Sustainability and our Suppliers
Our on-site commitment to the environment is extended throughout the supply chain and evident in our purchasing policies. To meet the requirements of both Avery Weigh-Tronix and parent company ITW, suppliers must focus on reducing the overall environmental impact of their activities and related carbon footprint, land filled waste and water usage. Suppliers are also expected to comply with all applicable laws and regulations around the globe, including those pertaining to human rights, as well as environmental and health and safety laws.
